Design Features

  • Taking inspiration from the Welsh hillside location, the multi-level scheme nestles comfortably into the steep site with materials that reflect the areas heritage and landscape.
  • A natural palette of materials creates a subtle and elegant aesthetic..

Solution

Timber Frame Features

  • Platform construction.
  • Roof systems comprised of closed panels ranging in depth from 350 to 400mm deep ‘I’ beams filled with ‘upcycled’ cellulose insulation, U-value 0.09 – 0.011W/m2K.
  • Structurally the large roof overhang roof was supported externally by a bespoke exposed glulam post and beam system. All connections were CNC processed offsite for effortless assembly onsite.
  • The external timber frame wall system ranged from 350mm to 450mm in thickness and was constructed with timber native to the school’s local area. They were manufactured and assembled in a Larsen truss method to minimise timber content and improve overall thermal performance. The wall void is filled with ‘upcycled’ cellulose insulation, U- value 0.10 – 0.14W/m2k.
  • Airtightness achieved (at 50 Pascals): 0.48 air changes per hour.
